Elwell kent pattern axe
I found this old axe while clearing a garden. It is an elwell kent pattern axe, the handle was completely rotten. I removed the old handle and put the head in some white vinegar to get the rust off. I left it in for 2 days and the rust came off easily with a light wire brushing. I then soaked it in wd40 to stop it flash rusting I then heated it up and coated it in wd40, it gets a nice dark grey/gold effect and protects the steel more Almost like blueing but not as hot (don't want to ruin the temper of the steel) I then broke out the files and put a nece edge and cleaned up the pummel. I then worked my way up in sandpaper grits on the pummel to get a polish and on the blade to get it razor sharp. Then came the long task of finding some suitable wood for the new handle. I went with a piece of hickory that I found in a friend's scrap pile. I didn't get pictured of shaping the handle as I got carried away just working I got the axe head on the handle and it's sanded to 240. It needed something more so I burned the bottom of the handle with the blowtorch and then resanded it back to 240. I think this gives it a nice look and that part of the handle usualy discolours anyway from the oils in you hand when using it This is going to fit in nicely with my carving tools and will make light work roughing out spoons and such It just needs a few coats of oil and with good maintenance I'm sure it will last a very long time.
