Renovating redundant power supplies donated to the UK Labaid charity before sending to African schools.
The power supplies have been received then checked over and modified to make them appropriate and safe for future use within schools.
Step 1
Looking for signs of damage such as over heating or effect of damp.
Step 2
The power supplies origonally had a remote control via IR which did not work as the transmitters were not working. The voltage display was not working so the printed circuit was removed
Step 3
Transformer voltages and leads were checked prior to reassembly and the Variac which adjusted the voltage had a carbon brush which was lubricated with WD40
Step 4
The front panel wis drilled to take a thermal cutout to limit the output current as the old PCD had included this protection. The case was cleaned with acetone to remove old markings which were not relevant
Step 5
The voltage was checked and labels added to show output voltage. The thermal cutout was tested by shorting the output.
Step 6
Following the PAT test the supplies are ready for shipping to schools who have little or no apparatus for science experiments. I have been a volunteer with this charity since retiring.
